Our approach

We are committed to operating in a way that is financially, socially and environmentally responsible.

As a global tobacco company we recognise the importance of manufacturing, marketing and selling our products in a way that is financially, socially and environmentally responsible. This underpins our growth strategy and is an integral part of how we do business. We believe that this focus and commitment not only helps us to build trust and protect our licence to operate, but also enhances our foundation for long-term sustainable sales growth.

As a legitimate and high profile company it is important that we are responsible in what we do and how we do it. Everything we do to fulfil our CR agenda is intended to support or complement our business strategy.

We recognise the controversial nature of our product and believe it is important to have it produced and handled by a responsible business. We both comply with and exceed current regulatory standards as we apply our own corporate standards, sharing best practice within our wider supply chain and within our business.

We manufacture and sell a range of high quality cigarettes and other tobacco products to meet the demand from millions of adults worldwide. We believe that adults should have the freedom to use and enjoy our products whilst being aware of the associated risks to their health.

It is the role of governments to provide the public with clear and consistent messages about these risks. We do not challenge these messages and support reasonable regulation of tobacco products.

Community and society

Business is about people and how we interact with one another, both internally within the Company but also in broader society. Responsible business is about recognising stakeholder interests or concerns and treating people with respect. This is in our mutual interest as it protects our license to operate and our corporate reputation.

Governments, investors and employees and a wide range of other stakeholders benefit economically through the wealth created by our business. Our activities are multi-faceted and include tobacco leaf procurement and processing, product manufacturing, distribution and responsible sales and marketing. Our supply chain involves tens of thousands of people from growers through to individual retailers and tobacconists.

As a legitimate business we have a role to play in society. In addition to our wealth creation we also contribute to society by working in partnership with authorities to fight illicit trade, we help inform various regulatory debates, we influence within our supply chain to promote the respect of human rights and we also support the communities connected with our business interests. Other than the right thing to do this all supports the longevity of our business.

Environmental management

We are concerned with the conservation of the environment in its broadest sense and recognise that certain resources are finite and must be used responsibly. We remain committed to minimising the impact that our operations have on the environment.

Our Group OHS&E policy is supported by various standards and related guidance to strengthen local environmental arrangements. Our management systems are based on ISO 14001 and we are committed to achieving the standard at all our manufacturing facilities. The review of the environmental performance of our manufacturing operations takes place at function level. Site level environmental performance reviews are undertaken as part of the local ISO 14001 management arrangements. These review processes help to cascade the Group environmental objectives and targets through the function to all our manufacturing sites worldwide.

We have a network of environmental advisers that meet regularly to discuss issues and share best practice. They have access to a central environmental toolkit that provides guidance on issues such as aspect and impact assessment and an environmental awareness training tool.

Energy efficiency, waste and waste to landfill minimisation and reductions in our carbon emissions are key elements of our environmental programme that also benefit our core business objective for cost optimization.
Water conservation and pollution control form part of our environmental management systems and waste water is controlled to meet local consent limits. We operate a Group standard for bulk fuel containment, spillage control and emergency action.
